What the hell is going on here?

So if you haven’t heard, there was yet another tragic shooting on a college campus, this time at Northern Illinois University (article). I really do not have much to say about the situation, I mean, what can you do? Reports indicate that the gunman was a former student with a good academic record. There was no apparent reason for this madness. The guy walked into a lecture hall and randomly started shooting students, killing seven including himself, and wounding 15 others.
Walking into a lecture hall with multiple weapons to open fire on the people within is like shooting fish in a barrel. What a freakin’ joke. Then he shot himself? Why do these bastards always take the easy way out?
Do you know what really bothers me about this situation? The basic randomness of the act. No apparent motive, just some crazy dude that decided to shoot a few people and then end his own life. The same was true about the shootings at Virginia Tech back in April (article). He killed 32 and then himself. I cannot count the number of hours I spent on UC’s campus cramped up in some lecture hall. There is no reason to lock those doors during the day or put up metal detectors. Those poor students are sitting ducks! It really makes you think, and it really pisses me off.
I wonder, what is wrong with these people? I have no answer. No one seems to have any answers, and I’m not sure we’ll ever find them. Let’s just hope and pray that this is the last time we have to hear about something this catastrophic in the news.
